Step One – Gather Supplies
When getting started, there is no need to spend a small fortune on expensive storage bins and organization systems. All you need are the basics, like trash bags, a few cardboard boxes, Ziploc bags, and some inexpensive plastic shoe storage boxes.
Step Two – Do A Thorough Clean Out
Before you attempt to get organized, you should always go through your belongings and perform a deep, thorough clean out. A good rule to follow is: anything you have not touched or used in a year needs to be removed. So, go through your belongings and get rid of unnecessary items.
Step Three – Sort It All Out
Now that you have your basic supplies and have done a thorough clean out, it is time to sort it all out. First, bag/box up all of the items that you are getting rid of. Next, take the plastic shoe storage boxes/Ziploc bags and use them to sort out groups of similar items. Organize items into little kits that will be easy to find when you need them. For instance, you can make a sewing kit, a letter writing/bill paying kit, mail kit, manicure/pedicure kit, etc.)
Step Four – Find a Home for Everything
Now that everything is sorted, you should be ready to find a home for everything. Take everything you have sorted out and decide on the best place to store it. Remember to select a place where you will be able to keep it neat and organized. You can utilize closets or shelving to stack your plastic shoe storage containers, or even store them under beds.
Step Five – Maintaining Your Clean Home
Lastly, now that you are on your way to an organized, clutter-free home, you need to keep it that way. Easily maintain your home by making sure areas that need to be cleaned out regularly have a cleaning schedule. Decide what areas should be cleaned once a week, once a month, etc. and stick to it. Areas such as closets, junk drawers, and home offices/desks need regular attention. You must also get into the habit of putting things back where they are meant to be stored. As the saying goes: “A place for everything and everything in its place”.
It is also important to take any unwanted items that you cleared out during your deep cleaning and donate them to others in need. You may no longer use something, but someone else might be grateful to have it. Take clothes that you no longer need or use to a thrift shop.
