Past Recipient : Deborah from Gainesville, FL

car donation recipientIn 2008, a registered nurse at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida wrote in to us at 1-800-Charity Cars about the touching story of one of the hospital’s patients who she helped care for. The nurse told us the story about a young 19 year old man, whom experienced an unexpected turn of events which completely changed his life and the lives of his family.

The teenage boy was living his life as a normal young adult. He enjoyed playing football in school, however; he suddenly began experiencing pain in his lower leg. This pain, they later found out, was attributed to Osteosarcoma, which is a type of bone cancer.

The nurse was very familiar with this type of cancer, as she too had a son who was suffering from Osteosarcoma, in his wrist. The nurse and the boy’s mother, Deborah, spent many restless nights walking the halls of the hospital together, as they unfortunately shared this common bond. Their sons laid only a room apart from one another, as they received their chemotherapy treatment.

Deborah lived 2 hours away from the Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, which she had to take her son to every two weeks for a stay that would last the duration of 3-5 days each visit. Deborah did not own a vehicle and relied heavily on rides from helpful friends and family members.

One Friday, Deborah’s son was scheduled to undergo a very important limb salvation surgery at the Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Deborah was unable to acquire reliable transportation to make the trip and, as a result, her son missed this very important surgery. Having access to a vehicle truly became a matter of life and death for her son.

1-800-Charity Cars had the pleasure of surprising Deborah with a 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette car donation, outside of the Sands Hospital in February of 2009. With this vehicle donation, Deborah was now able to make certain that her son would make it for all of his hospital visits to receive the care required for a successful recovery. We are thankful to the nurse who wrote into 1-800-Charity Cars about this family’s touching story and to the many generous donors that allow us to provide these gifts to families in need.
