With the New Year comes high hopes for positive change and a better year than the one we are leaving behind. Most people are looking for a chance to start fresh and leave the old year behind, by bringing in the new one with a laundry list of resolutions. 1-800 Charity Cars, providers of free donated vehicles to struggling families nationwide, understands how one change can be the stepping stone to a whole new path in a person’s life. Below are some tips to help you keep your New Year’s resolutions and start the New Year the right way:
When making New Year’s resolutions, start small and work your way up through the year! For instance, if you want to quit smoking, which is a very popular New Year resolution, realize that giving up a habit you have had for many years is not something easily or quickly done. Start by tapering off day by day, as you work up to completing your goal. As you complete each smaller goal, your larger goal will seem easier to achieve!
Make A Plan
No matter what you resolve to do in the New Year, you need to make a plan! Write down your resolution(s), not only an explanation of what you want to achieve but, with a clear list of the steps it will take for you to reach them. Deciding to set a goal for anything in life requires more than just that said goal, you must have an action plan in place. With a clearly laid out plan, you are able to break it down into manageable steps. This will increase your chance of success in reaching your goals.
Specify your resolution
Setting very broad and general resolutions, such as get healthy or lose weight, can keep you from making the changes you are seeking. You need to be specific and then you will see a more attainable goal in your reach. Instead of planning to lose weight, ask yourself how much weight? What will you do to lose the weight and what will you do for yourself once you hit that goal? Clear cut goals are always easier to achieve and you are more likely to follow through on a specific resolution!
Have a support system
When you make major changes in your life, you shouldn’t have to do it alone. Tell your family and friends your resolutions so that they are aware of the goals you have set for yourself and they will be inclined to encourage and support you. It can also be a catalyst for them to want to make similar changes in their own lives.
Don’t Give Up
If you get discouraged or suffer a setback, don’t give up. Pick yourself up and keep on trying. If you stumble along the way, it does not mean you have to give up or wait for the next New Year to do it. You can keep going and continue to work towards your goal. It is normal to struggle or make mistakes and you should not beat yourself up about it. The ability to keep trying, no matter what setbacks you face, will make all the difference between those who succeed at their resolutions and those who do not.
